Written documents mention Groznjan (Croatia) for the first time in 1102 as a property of the aquilean patriarchs. The name Graeciniana is carved on the roman gravestone found in the village.Other monuments of the same period recovered on the neighbouring hills testify about vivid activity of the area in agriculture and trade in the port on the river Mirna.

Situated on 288 meters above see level, with a horizon widely open towards Motovun and mountain Učka, Grožnjan is only 20 kilometres from Slovenian border and 7 kilometres from Buje.Grožnjan was an indipendent municipality from 1358 till 1955 when it became a part of a community of Buje.Since 1993 it is again a separate community in which Croatian and Italian languages are equal. Newly born community is trying to develop tourism based on cultural heritage and art.Local people are also counting on village tourism offering healthy food, in particular in neighbouring Kostanjica where excellent sorts of malvazija and refošk wines are produced, as well as oliv oil, and in Završje widely known for it's red wine teran. For those who can enjoy tranquillity and fresh, unpolluted-polluted air in Grožnjan.
